Labor has just given up on forestry

Twice in two weeks the Gillard Labor Government has been a total no-show at major national forest industry events.

Forestry Minister Joe Ludwig and Parliamentary secretary for Forestry Sid Sidebottom both failed to attend:

- The Institute of Foresters of Australia conference in Canberra last week. The IFA is a peak national body representing more than 1300 foresters and forest scientists.

- This week's National Timber Councils Association conference in Melbourne. This group comprises local government representatives of timber communities from across the country.

"At a time the industry needs strong leadership and Government support, Labor is completely missing in action," Senator Colbeck said.

"It has been obvious in past years that Minister Ludwig has abandoned responsibility for our forests to Environment Minister Tony Burke and the Greens.

"He and Mr Sidebottom have been conspicuous by their absence from both of these important forums.

"They have abandoned their forest communities and their forest communities know it."
