What's the real story on Labor's dairy industry whitewash?

Tasmanian Senator Richard Colbeck today called on the Labor Government to clarify its position on dairy industry funding for the State.

"It's hard to follow Labor policy at the best of times," Senator Colbeck said. "Just a month ago Regional Development Minister Simon Crean announced dairy industry development funding would be linked to the passage of the sham forest deal through the Tasmanian Parliament.

"That was a complete disgrace.

"Now his replacement, Anthony Albanese, says proposed programs would be assessed on their merits."

Senator Colbeck said it appeared the Government was trying to smooth over the shameful position Labor had adopted in linking the fortunes of dairy to that of the forestry industry.

"Unemployment in parts of Tasmania is above 9%," Senator Colbeck said. "What industry needs is for Government to stop playing puerile games, decide whether they are going to fund this project or not so it can get on with the job.

"It does not need what the Government is providing, which is the uncertainty of mixed messages and a completely shambolic delivery of policy."
