Assessment of small pelagic fishery welcomed

September 26, 2014

Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, welcomed today's announcement that the small pelagic fishery will be assessed for Marine Stewardship Council certification.

Senator Colbeck said MSC assessment was a good opportunity for the fishery to be independently reviewed and he commended industry for voluntarily seeking certification.

"I congratulate industry on making this significant investment and for the taking initiative to have the small pelagic fishery further assessed by a third party. I look forward to seeing the results," Senator Colbeck said.

The MSC assesses fisheries against world best practice standards to ensure they are sustainable and effectively managed.

"Australia's fisheries are globally benchmarked and regarded among the best managed and most sustainable in the world," Senator Colbeck said.

"The Government is committed to working with commercial and recreational fishers to ensure Commonwealth fisheries continue to be competitive, profitable and sustainable."
