Meeting election commitment to indigenous fishery

July 30, 2014

The Coalition is meeting its election commitment to enhance relationships between indigenous fisheries and broader fisheries management.

Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, is in Broome today to meet with members of the Fishery Research and Development Corporation Indigenous Reference Group.

Senator Colbeck said the meeting was part of the Coalition's election commitment to focus on enhancing the interactions between indigenous fisheries and broader fisheries management.

"The Coalition is committed to working effectively with the indigenous fishing community and ensuring their views are understood and heard," he said.

"Today's meeting with the FRDC Indigenous Reference Group is all about listening to their ideas and concerns and finding out how we can better work together."

Senator Colbeck said cooperation between all levels of the fisheries industry was important as at the end of the day everyone was accessing the same resource.
