Opportunity beckons for Tassie undergrads

23 December, 2014

Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, encourages Tasmanian agriculture undergraduates to apply for the prestigious Horizon Scholarship before applications close at the end of next month.

Senator Colbeck said the Horizon Scholarship programme provides students with extensive exposure to their sponsor's industry and a valuable career building experience.

"The support provided by the Horizon Scholarship helps students with a keen interest to pursue agricultural studies," Senator Colbeck said.

"We need the youth and enthusiasm of young people to continue to build our productivity and profitability in the years ahead - and to keep our rural communities vibrant."

"Studying at university can be extremely valuable, but to study and be exposed to the depth of opportunities available in agriculture related careers is priceless."

"I encourage Tasmanian undergraduates enrolling in a degree related to agriculture to apply for the Horizon Scholarship so they can progress their careers and keep the $1.2 billion Tasmanian agriculture industry thriving."

Eligible students must be studying an agriculture-related degree, including but not limited to the fields of agricultural science, rural science, livestock and animal science, agribusiness, plant science, agricultural economics, resource management, sustainability and food security.

The Horizon Scholarship is an initiative of the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) in partnership with industry sponsors. It provides students with networking opportunities, industry-based work placements, professional development workshops and mentoring, as well as financial support for each year of their degree.

"Young people are the key to the future of primary industries and are vital to our rural areas. We need to get the message out that agriculture in Australia is a success story, and youth can be a part of it," Senator Colbeck said.

For more information about the Horizon Scholarship visit the RIRDC website www.rirdc.gov.au/horizon.

Applications close 5pm on 30 January 2015 with winners announced in March.
