UNESCO considers Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area listing

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has considered the Australian Government's proposed minor boundary modification of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The Australian Government has sought the removal of about 4.7 percent of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, whilst maintaining the areas of high value.

The inclusion of this area was opposed by many in the local community on the basis that it includes plantations and areas that previously have been impacted by forestry operations and other infrastructure.

We believe that areas impacted by forestry compromise the integrity of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The Australian Government has sought to achieve a balance between the sustainable use of natural resources and protection of the environment. This could have been be done while ensuring the integrity of the Outstanding Universal Value of the Tasmanian Wilderness.

The Coalition believes in a prosperous future for Tasmania and is committed to supporting a stronger, more competitive economy for the state.

The Australian Government has honoured its election commitment to request a minor boundary modification to the previous government's expanded listing.

The Committee has not approved the Australian Government's request. Australia accepts and will consider the decision of the World Heritage Committee.

Australia is undertaking further study and consultation with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community in order to provide more detailed information on the cultural value of the property and how these relate to the Outstanding Universal Value.
