$950 million Pacificus project gets the go ahead

27 November 2015

The world-class, ecologically sustainable Pacificus Tourism Project at Hummock Hill Island, near Gladstone in Queensland has today been given the green light to proceed after gaining environmental approval.

"This is a fantastic boost for the tourism industry in Queensland - once operational, the project will provide an estimated 700 full time positions in tourism and related industries as well as 850 flow-on jobs," said the Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck.

"Pacificus is of both state and national significance - it's one of the largest current developments in Australia and is expected to generate $55 million per annum in regional tourism expenditure by 2022.

"Tourism is a key focus for this Government, we have made investment in tourism infrastructure one of our five National Investment Priorities and this project is a great example of what can be achieved.

Senator Colbeck said the Government's efforts to boost flight capacity, its program of visa reform and focused international marketing were increasing Australia's appeal in the growing global tourism market.

"This is an industry which supports around a million jobs, delivers tens of billions into the economy and is forecast to grow very quickly over the forthcoming years," Senator Colbeck said.

"We need projects of this scale to remain attractive in a very competitive global marketplace and Pacificus' emphasis on sustainability combined with outstanding economic credentials makes it a perfect example of what Australia can achieve."

The local predominantly mining and industrial economy will also benefit greatly from the added diversity and provide the region's youth with alternative employment opportunities. I especially pay tribute to the Member for Flynn, Ken O'Dowd for his long commitment to realising this project.

$200 million of infrastructure services will be constructed for the project that will permanently benefit the existing adjacent rural communities.

"This project truly delivers on all fronts - economically, environmentally and most importantly, for the local regional community."
