Tourism and international education in spotlight at Indonesia Australia Business Week

16 November, 2015

Strengthening partnerships between Australia and Indonesia around education, training and tourism will be on the agenda during Indonesia-Australia Business Week (IABW).

Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck, today departs for Jakarta to attend the inaugural IABW, which runs from 17-20 November.

"Indonesia is our closest neighbour and a growing economy but it faces the challenge of up-skilling its workforce and boosting competition ahead of the commencement of the ASEAN Economic Community," Senator Colbeck said.

"To maintain its current growth rate, Indonesia is improving its human capital through education and skills training and Australian institutions are in a prime position to help by building stronger commercial partnerships with Indonesian organisations."

An Australian delegation of more than 350 business people will be led by Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb and will focus on opportunities in infrastructure, food, resources and energy, health care and education.

The delegation includes more than 50 educational providers and 40 tourism industry delegates who will accompany Senator Colbeck.

"While in Indonesia I will attend a range of events including an information session with HR professionals on Australia's skills and training capability as well as a roundtable on how to address Indonesia's skill shortages," he said.

"I will participate in a number of bilateral meetings with my counterparts in Indonesia and look forward to discussing the opportunities for developing strong partnerships around tourism and education.
