Stop Labor's Attack on Private Health Cover
Think Labor’s attack on private health cover only hurts older Tasmanians? Think again.
Labor is forcing people aged 65 more for their private health insurance.
Under the Albanese Government’s plan to scrap higher rebates for over 65s, older Tasmanians face private health insurance price rises of more than $1,614 from April next year.
The problem is that many people can’t afford that - and will be forced to drop private health insurance.
That means more pressure goes onto public hospitals.
The result? Longer waits and more strain on our state health system, which is already under severe pressure.
Emergency department wait times in Tasmania are among the worst in Australia, beds are bottlenecked as patients are stuck in hospital beds due to a lack of available aged care or NDIS placements.
This is not just an issue for older Tasmanians. If more people are forced to drop private health insurance due to rising costs, the increased pressure on our hospital system will be felt by everyone—leading to longer wait times and reduced access to care for families, workers, and younger generations as well.
Tasmania has the oldest population of any Australian state or territory.
Older Australians should be encouraged to keep their private health cover, not punished for it.
